Telnet Access
TELNET is ...
A method by which you can connect your computer directly into the
library's computer.
It can give you access to the library's electronic catalogs, indexes, and Suffolk Email.
Below are instructions on how to tell if TELNET is already installed on your computer,
(some computer operating systems come with it pre-installed)
and, if not, how to install TELNET.

- Installing Telnet...
- Access to libraries' electronic catalogs and indexes, and those at many other
institutions, may require the installation of Telnet software in your browser (e.g.,
Internet Explorer, Netscape, or Opera).
- Telnet.exe software is automatically installed on computers with Windows 95/98 in the c:\windows
directory/folder. However, it may need to be enabled if it has not already been
done.
- The following instructions are for installation on computers using the Windows 95/98 or
Windows NT operating system. With slight adaptation, it should work with Windows 3.x. If
your computer is part of a local network, or if you are having other problems with these
instructions, you need to contact a member of your local information technology staff.
- Installing Telnet in Netscape 3.x with Windows 95/98 or Windows
NT.

[This will probably also work with earlier versions of Netscape. Note that different
software is needed if you are using Windows 3.x]
- In Netscape, click Options, then General Preferences, then Apps
- Move the cursor/pointer down to Telnet Application:
- Enter the path where Telnet.exe is located, usually c:\windows\telnet.exe, and
add the file. Either use the Browse button to install the software, or enter the
path.
- Click OK, return to the Library Homepage, and click Stars -[Telnet]. When
the CCVM screen appears, press Enter/Return.
- Installing Telnet in Netscape Communicator with Windows 95/98
or Windows NT --If needed.
- In Communicator, click Edit along the top row.
- Click Preferences
- Click Applications
- In the Description panel, scroll down to and click URL: Telnet Protocol
- Click Edit to the right of the panel
- Either type in c:\windows\telnet.exe, or use the browse feature to locate the
directory/folder where it is located.
- click Open
- click OK toward the bottom of the panel.
- Click OK once again.
- If all works out well, you should be back at your browser screen.
- Installing Telnet in any version of Internet Explorer with
Windows 95/98 or Windows NT --If needed.
- Open up Windows Explorer--Click Start, Programs
- Click View
- Click File Types
- Scroll down click URL: TN3270 Protocol
- Click Edit, then click New
- In the Action box enter Open
- Tab to the Applications used to perform this action: and install the QWS3270S.EXE
software. Either type in the path, or use the Browse button to locate the file and
open it.
- Click OK toward the top of the screen
- Click Close at the bottom of the screen
- Click Close, once again, and click OK.
- Return to the Library Homepage and click Stars.
- Use the default Telnet installation. There is no need to install special software for
Telnet.
- Installing Telnet in Opera.
- Click on Preferences
- Click on Advanced...
- Locate the telnet.exe software and install it.
- Click Ok
- Windows 3.x
- To install a Telnet client in Windows 3.x, search one of the shareware sites for a
Windows 3.x compatible Telnet program.
