PERMISSION FORMS
FOR INTERNET USE

Dear Parents and/or Guardians,

As you may know, access to the Internet is one of the most popular services the Lindenhurst Memorial Library offers. Many of our Internet users are children. With the best interests of your child in mind, we have developed a new permission form for use of the library’s Internet computers. Beginning July 1, all minors (under 18 years of age) requesting use of a library Internet computer, are required to have a signed permission form on file. Permission forms are available at the Circulation Desk. The minor’s parent or legal guardian must be present to sign the form. No exceptions will be made. Also, beginning July 1, middle school students are required to use the Internet computers in the Children’s Room only. High school students may continue to use the computers in the Adult Reference area.

Thank you for your cooperation.

Do It Yourself
Self-Renew

Whether you’re on your home computer (on our library’s home page) or on the library’s catalog computer, you have access to the following circulation options:

VIEW YOUR OWN RECORD
By entering your name, library barcode, and a self-created 6 to 8 digit PIN, you can view your checked out items (with due dates), holds placed, and any fines.

REQUEST AN ITEM
If you see an item in our catalog that you would like, just request a hold placed on it while you’re online. The next morning, staff either will retrieve the item if it’s available on the shelf, or place a hold if the item is checked out, or interloan it if available from another library. As usual, you will be called when the item is ready for pickup.

RENEW AN ITEM
Need a few more days to finish? Renew your item at home (feature film videos and DVDs excluded.) This option is available only when no one else has placed a hold on the item, you haven’t exceeded the renewal limit, and the item isn’t overdue. Instructional flyers are available, at the library, for all of these options. And, of course, a librarian will be happy to demonstrate them.

Don’t forget—when you’re at the library, check out your books and videos on your own at our self-checkout machine.

e-books - What Are They?
A Microsoft advertisement recently claimed that in ten years e-book titles will be outselling paper books in many categories. In fact, the latest craze in the publishing and library world is the e-book. An e-book is an electronic version of a book downloaded from the World Wide Web onto a personal computer, and then uploaded onto what’s called an “e-book reader.” There are a few brands of e-book readers from which to choose. Some are hand-held, some are the size of laptop computers, but all give advantages that paper books cannot provide: the ability to underline passages, find specific text, change text size and add notes. Most e-book readers hold the equivalent of at least 10 books; many can hold much more. Most, if not all, run on batteries and some give the option of backlighting for nighttime viewing.

What kinds of books are available in e-book format?
All kinds: classics, non-fiction, and best-selling fiction, can all be read on e-book readers. In fact, Stephen King’s Riding the Bullet is the world's first mass market book available only in e-book format. Classic children’s books also are available in e-book format. Also in development are several websites offering e-book editions of children’s non-classics and picture books.

Will the library be offering access to e-books?
Yes, watch for our announcement.

Will I need a computer to take out e-books?
The library will provide everything you need to use the e-book, including the e-book reader. Library staff will download e-books onto the reader for you. Nothing strikes greater fear into book-loving people than the notion that paper books may one day be obsolete. But times are changing, and, because libraries always strive to provide the latest and the best technology, we will soon bring you that fascinating new medium, the electronic book.

WHAT'S NEW!
From the Audio Visual Center

As of March 1, 2000, the number of CD-ROMs
available for check-out has been increased from
two (2) to five (5) per adult library card.

Were you aware that the AV department includes CDs for your listening pleasure? One of the most enjoyable genres includes soundtracks of Broadway shows. Whether you've seen a show and want to reminisce or have yet to go and want a musical preview, we probably have what you're looking for.

Some older samples include the soundtracks from Hair, A Chorus Line and Cats. Newer sound recordings include the latest Grease, Fosse and Cabaret. CDs can be borrowed for 7 days. Pick one up today!

Did you know that the CD-ROM collection can help you plan your next vacation? It can also find the source of a familiar quotation or even help you pass your driver's test or write a resume.

Check out these and other useful programs from the CD-ROM Collection:

1. "National Parks: The Multimedia Family Guide", (WIN95/3.1)
2. "Bartlett's Familiar Quotations Expanded Multimedia Edition"
      (ages 6 & up) (WIN 95/Win3.1, 3.11)

3. "Driver's Education: The Fun, Safe Driving Simulator", (WIN 95/98)

4. "Tom Jackson Presents The Perfect Resume", (WIN 95/MAC)

For further information, please contact Carrie Guarria, Audiovisual Librarian

Also, the AV department has acquired by donation sound recorded Bibles in several languages. Because of space consideration, these tapes from Bible Alliance will not be kept in the public area but will be stored in our Technical Services Dept. If you would like to borrow any or all of these, please ask at the reference desk or speak to Carrie Guarria or Anne Collins.

Good Listening!
